On Friday December 11, 2020 the FDA approved the first vaccine to combat against the COVID-19 virus. The federal government is now distributing the vaccine across the country. Here are several key points to understand when putting together a strategy to help communities receive the vacccine.
- The government is in charge of allocating the vaccine to the states.
- The states all have a vaccine plan in which the vaccines will be distributed SEE https://web.csg.org/covid19/state-vaccine-plans/
- Each state is responsible for allocating the doses that they receive
- CVS and Walgrens have been selected by the government to be vaccinating pharmacies on a national level
- The CDC will allow facilities to choose their vaccinating pharmacy or elect their pharmacy at some time during phase 2
LTC pharmacies should be in constant contact with their facilities about the process and provide education as information becomes available. It is recommended that LTC pharmacies reach out to their respective states and find out additional details.
